Becoming an IPL captain is similar to being put behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car; you are in charge of speed, steering, strategy, and somehow avoiding crashing. It’s not for the faint-hearted. So, when a captain lifts the trophy in his first season at the helm, amazing is an understatement.
Enter Rajat Patidar, who just did what no RCB captain did in 18 seasons. From carrying the weight of the expectations to handing over the long-awaited trophy to Virat Kohli, Patidar’s first season in charge was a fairy tale. But he is not alone. Before him, three others accomplished the unthinkable as well. Let’s review the handful of select leaders who took their first IPL captaincy and turned it into championship gold.

From Dark Horses to Crown Holder: Patidar and RCB’s Epic Rise
If you’ve been following RCB for all these years, you know that they have had quite a complicated relationship with the IPL trophy. They seemed cursed; heartbreak had become their yearly tradition, and then came 2025. With Faf du Plessis stepping down, RCB had handed over captaincy to Rajat Patidar, who was no longer becoming ‘captain material’ as a commonly accepted definition of material.
What made the win even more meaningful? He forgot the trophy, but not the players who deserved the win. He dedicated it to the franchise’s heartbeat, Virat Kohli, who’d served that franchise in all 18 years of its existence; see when Kohli held the trophy, goosebumps.
The Trailblazers Before Him: Warne, Rohit, and Hardik.
Of course, before Patidar, there were 3 others to achieve the captaincy trifecta.
Shane Warne (2008)

The Australian icon, a disider, was the captain and coach of the Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural season of the IPL. Despite being perennial underdogs, RR flourished under Warne’s leadership as he produced a title-winning team from a team of misfits who snuck past CSK in an unforgettable final-ball finish. Warne had established how valuable a first-year IPL captain can be.
Rohit Sharma (2013)

Rohit didn’t enter IPL 2013 as captain. However, when Ricky Ponting stepped down, Rohit led and took the Mumbai Indians to their inaugural title. And that was just the start, as he would win four more titles after that! But 2013 was a great start, and he certainly launched his captaincy legacy with great style to start! Talk about responding to pressure!
Hardik Pandya (2022)

There was so much ucertainty around what to expect when the Gujarat Titans made their debut in 2022. To appoint Hardik Pandya as captain was such a shock to many of us, yet it turned out to be genius. GT played with no fear under Hardik’s leadership and won the title in year one. I think it took us all by surprise, which shows the emphasis on a modern-day fearless approach to captaincy. Hardik performed his role with bat and ball to great effect, as well as keeping the team focused and on the same page.
What Sets These Captains Apart?
The commonality among these four stories is confidence under pressure and thinking clearly. Not that any of them were necessarily the biggest names when they got the captaincy (except for Warne maybe), but they all brought something different to the role.
Warne had tactical genius, Rohit had tranquility, Hardik had energy, and Patidar had quiet authority. None of them are the archetypal aggressive captains who shout instructions from mid-off; they were leaders in action, correct decision-making, and harmony of mental state.
Here’s a thought: With more teams valuing new leadership and looking beyond the legacy stars, will we see more first-time wonders in the future? Or will these four unique jewels remain rare in the sparkling crown of IPL?
Tell us which first-time captain inspired you the most—and who could be the next star on this elite list. The IPL certainly never fails to surprise.
