On this Day: Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by five wickets in Dubai to seal their fifth IPL title in 2020

On November 12 in 2020, Mumbai Indians took down Delhi Capitals in a thrilling IPL final to lift their fifth title. The game took place at the Dubai International Stadium, and saw the Rohit Sharma-led side defeat their counterparts by a margin of five-wickets to add their fifth trophy in the cabinet. Earlier in the game, DC skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and let his side put the score on the board first. While the side hoped for a favourable start, what actually unfolded was beyond expectations.

Delhi faced an earlier setback when Marcus Stoinis had to walk back on the first ball of the innings. The duo of Trent Boult and Quinton de Kock picked another wicket for the side when they took down veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane. Shikhar Dhawan was next to depart on 15 off 13 runs. While the duo of skipper Shreyas Iyer and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant tried to give the side some stability, Mumbai bowlers showed no mercy.

The Delhi batters could come up with a decent total of 156 runs with the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs. In return, skipper Rohit Sharma gave a fiery start to the side as he posted 68 runs off 51 balls with a combination of five boundaries and four maximums. Unfortunately, apart from him, no other batter could contribute much. While it seemed that Delhi had almost won, the below par total set in the first innings helped Mumbai reach their fifth title effortlessly.

With the trophy, Rohit Sharma became the first captain to score two or more centuries in an IPL final. Earlier, he had scored 50 runs off 26 balls against CSK in 2015. Not only this, but Mumbai Indians became only the second team to defend its IPL title after CSK achieved the feat in 2010 and 2011. It was Rohit’s 200th IPL match, and he became the second player to reach this landmark after MS Dhoni.
