On This Day: Indian batter Prithvi Shaw was born in 1999

Indian batter Prithvi Shaw is one of those cricketers who got a great start to their international career , but couldn’t continue the same momentum. From being the Under-19 World Cup winning captain to scoring a hundred in his Test debut, Shaw was being looked at as a next big thing in cricket in 2018. However, some controversies and poor form at the highest level has put his international career in the doldrums. Regardless, Prithvi Shaw is celebrating his 25th birthday on November 9, 2024.

Prithvi Shaw was having the best time of his career at the age of 18, when he led the junior Indian team to the Under-19 World Cup triumph in 2018. He was also picked by Delhi Daredevils (now known as Delhi Capitals) at a price of INR 1.2 crore for IPL 2018. After a few months, Shaw got an opportunity to make his Test debut for India in a match against West Indies in Rajkot on October 4, 2018. The 18-year-old made it memorable by scoring 134 runs in his maiden Test innings, and became the second youngest Indian batter after Sachin Tendulkar to score a hundred in Test cricket.

Apart from his maiden century, Prithvi Shaw has also scored two fifties in his Test career. The right-hander has played five Test matches in his career so far, scoring 339 runs at an average of 42.37. However, he hasn’t been playing red-ball cricket for India since December 2020. Apart from that, Shaw has also played six ODIs for India, amassing 189 runs, and just one T20I, where he out for golden duck.

Hundred on Test debut: Prithvi Shaw is in the elite list of players who have scored a hundred in their Test debut. Playing his first international game against West Indies in Rajkot on October 4, 2018, Shaw scored 134 runs off 154 with 19 boundaries, announcing his arrival in international cricket.

2nd youngest Indian player to score a Test hundred: With his knock in debut Test against West Indies, Prithvi Shaw also became the second youngest Indian player after Sachin Tendulkar to score a century in Test cricket. Shaw scored his maiden Test hundred at the age of 18 years and 329 days, while Tendulkar achieved the feat at the age of 17 years and 107 days.
