On This Day: Indian batting superstar Virat Kohli was born in 1988

Ace Indian cricketer Virat Kohli is celebrating his 36th birthday on November 5, 2024. He has been one of the best batters to play for the country, and is regarded amongst the best in the world. Kohli has played so many match-winning knocks for India in all formats of the game, apart from taking his team out of troubled waters on numerous occasions. The right-handed batter came into the limelight when he led the junior Indian cricket team to the U-19 Cricket World Cup triumph in 2008. After a few months, he went on to make his international debut for India in an ODI match against Sri Lanka in Dambulla on August 18, 2008.

With 27134 runs and 80 centuries, Virat Kohli is just behind Sachin Tendulkar in the list of India’s leading run-scorer in all three formats combined. Apart from that, Kohli has shattered several batting records in his career so far. Fastest to 10000 ODI Runs: Virat Kohli is the fastest ever cricketer to reach the milestone of 10000 runs in the ODI format. The right-hander achieved the feat in his 205th ODI innings against West Indies in Visakhapatnam on October 24, 2018.

All-time highest run scorer in T20 World Cup: After India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, Virat Kohli retired from the shortest format as an all-time leading run-scorer in the T20 World Cup history. He has accumulated 1292 runs from 35 matches in his T20 World Cup career from 2012 to 2024.

Most centuries in ODI cricket: Virat Kohli has now also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to score the most number of centuries in the ODI format. He scored his 50th ODI ton during the 2023 ODI World Cup semi final against New Zealand in Mumbai on November 15, 2023.

Most runs in a single World Cup edition: Virat Kohli had a record–breaking 2023 ODI World Cup campaign in India, where he amassed 765 runs from 11 matches. Kohli batted with an average of 95.62 along with three centuries and six half-centuries, and went on to score most runs in a single edition of an ODI World Cup.

Most runs in a single IPL edition: Virat Kohli shattered all kinds of records during his memorable run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2016 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The right-hander amassed 973 runs from 16 matches at an average of 81.08 with four hundreds and seven fifties, to become the highest run-scorer in the single edition of the IPL.
