One of the finest Indian wicketkeeper-batters, Wriddhiman Saha on Sunday, November 3 announced his decision to retire from all forms of cricket. His decision to hang his boots came late on Sunday after being left out of the Test squad for the highly-anticipated five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024, set to commence from November 22 in Perth.
The veteran wicketkeeper-batter took to social media to confirm his decision while adding that the ongoing Ranji Trophy campaign would be his last. With this, Saha reportedly doesn’t plan to feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season too.
Wriddhiman Saha to retire after Ranji Trophy 2024-25 campaign
Taking to X (formerly called Twitter), Saha cherished his experience on the cricketing field while adding that this season will be his last. “After a cherished journey in cricket, this season will be my last. I am honoured to represent Bengal one final time, playing only in the Ranji Trophy before I retire. Let’s make this season one to remember!” Saha wrote.
It is to be noted that Saha was an integral part of the Indian team, especially in Test cricket before being released from the central contracts in 2023. After he was released, he never returned into the side. After making his Test debut in February 2010, Saha featured in 40 Tests, scoring 1353 runs at an average of 29.41 and a strike rate of 45.51.
Moreover, it is being speculated that the 40-year-old even intends to stay away from IPL, however, he is yet to clarify on the same. Speaking of his stint in the cash-rich league, he is one of the players who have featured in every single season, starting since 2008. He has played for five franchises, namely, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Punjab Kings (PBKS), SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Gujarat Titans (GT). The veteran wicketkeeper-batter, who wasn’t retained by GT, reportedly played his final match in the IPL 2024 and hasn’t registered for the IPL 2025 mega auction, set to take place later this month.
