The less success you have as you get older: Simon Doull on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s form slump

Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull commented on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s form slump. Doull said that it becomes a lot harder when one is approaching the end of their career. Notably, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and talismanic batter Virat Kohli are not in the best of their form of late. Both of them couldn’t come up with notable performances with the bat in the recently-concluded Test series against New Zealand, and their form slump affected India’s performance as a team.

In the three Tests, Kohli could only score 93 runs while Rohit came up with 91 runs. This is after their respective half-centuries in the second innings of the Bengaluru Test. Cricketer-turned-commentator Doull said that for a player, the going gets tough as they approach the end of their career. He said, “The later in your career you go, the less success you have or the less success you have as you get older. If you find it very, very tough mentally to get back to that position to put yourself through the hard rigorous of the training, the preparation.”

It becomes a lot harder: Simon Doull on Virat and Rohit’s increasing age

“I don’t think any of these two guys have dropped off as far as that is concerned, but they’re still not quite getting the rewards. They’ve been there, done it in the game. Of course, they can come back and do it again, but it just becomes a lot harder and that’s what they have to be prepared to go through,” Doull spoke on Jio Cinema.

Speaking about Rohit Sharma, Doull, as quoted by IndiaToday, said, “From when you’ve been at such a high level and you have a little form slump or things just aren’t quite working out you look for things within yourself. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to change something? Are the eyes just slightly less as effective as they were five years ago when I was seeing everything like a pumpkin. They do grow on you as you get a little bit older. Rohit is in the same boat.”
