Romelu Lukaku rejected Premier League clubs to join Napoli: Antonio Conte reveals

Antonio Conte, the Napoli manager, has revealed that star striker Romelu Lukaku joined the Italian club after turning down multiple offers from Premier League clubs this past summer. The comments from Antonio Conte came after Romelu Lukaku scored a key goal for Napoli during their vital 2-0 win over AC Milan at the San Siro, to take a seven-point lead in the Serie A standings ahead of Inter Milan after playing just 10 games this season.

In the fifth minute of the first half, Romelu Lukaku scored the first goal of the match for Napoli after Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa played him in behind the AC Milan defence. It led to Romelu Lukaku barging his way past Strahinja Pavlovic’s challenge before smashing a low shot past Mike Maignan into the bottom right corner, to give Napoli a 1-0 lead in the highly important Serie A clash.

The 43th minute of the contest saw Khvicha Kvaratskhelia extend Napoli’s lead to 2-0 with the help of an assist from Mathias Olivera. AC Milan tried hard to get a goal on the night in front of their home fans at the San Siro with the majority of the possession, but the Napoli defence held firm, to deny them the opportunity to get a foot in the door.

In the post-match interview, Napoli manager Antonio Conte spoke about the commitment of Romelu Lukaku for the Italian club even before he joined them in the summer, and remarked, as per Tribal Football, “There is great empathy with Romelu, he wanted to come to Naples at all costs, he even refused the Premier League to work together again. I can speak highly of him. I am lucky to have an exceptional group of guys. If you have guys ready to die, sportingly speaking, you know you can have everything.”

Conte also spoke about how little time he had with his Napoli players prior to taking on AC Milan at the San Siro. He said, “I suffer because I would like to win them all. We prepared for this match with just one training session having played on Saturday. I thank the staff and the people who are constantly stressed, I ask a lot of myself and also of the others. The availability of everyone is the thing I like most, together with the unity of purpose.”

“The team has scored many points but we will have to be prepared even when there is some setback. We want to make our fans proud. The boys have all been on the ball. I am excited to work with this group, they are open in what we do,” the Napoli manager reiterated his and the player’s commitment towards the club and their fans.
