FIFA accused of not paying out players over £3 million

FIFA , the governing body of world football, is accused of not paying out the final part of the agreed sum of money to over 420 players across Europe, amounting to £3.09 million, after their contracts weren’t honoured by their respective clubs. According to the reports, there have been some payments made in this regard in various European countries by FIFA, but the final one is yet to go through.

Notably, as per the report from the BBC, the money to be paid to the players from the FIFA’s Fund for Players, which was set up in 2020, while the outstanding payments have been due since September 2023. Many of the concerned players are reportedly unemployed or retired right now, which is why these sums of money are quite important for their livelihood.

FIFA has received a plea about the outstanding payment to players from one of the national football federations

One of the national football federations has named more than 30 players in a plea to FIFA to release the outstanding sums of money, while pointing out the difficulties in managing the finances for those players. Moreover, FIFA is currently in a dispute with Fifpro, the union of the global players, in regards to the international calendar, which could have a bearing on the aforementioned matter.

With the increased matches in world football, Fifpro and FIFA are at odds with each other, especially about the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup 2025, which has been expanded to 32 teams. As of this writing, there have been no negotiations around television contracts or an update around the prize money for the upcoming tournament next summer.
