Top five highest team totals in Test history – Check Here

On Thursday, October 10, the England cricket team posted the fourth highest total in the history of Test cricket, reaching 823/7 in just 150 overs before declaring their first innings in the first Test match at the Multan Cricket Stadium. With the incredible triple hundred from Harry Brook, backed up by a double hundred by Joe Root in the sultry heat of Multan, the visitors took a massive first innings lead of 267 runs during the afternoon session on day four of the first Test after Pakistan were bowled out for 556 in 149 overs in their first innings.

790/3d (for West Indies vs Pakistan, 1958)

At the Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, the West Indies batting lineup posted the fifth highest total in the history of Test cricket, scoring 790/3 declared before winning the match by an innings and 174 runs. Garry Sobers scored an unbeaten 365 while Conrad Hunte scored a double hundred for West Indies, playing a major role for the team in putting  up a massive first innings score on the board 66 years ago.

In the first Test of the three-match series on the tour to Pakistan in 2024, the England cricket team made a mockery out of the hosts by going past 800-run total for the third time in their Test hundred. Harry Brook was the star of the English batting effort, scoring 317 runs at nearly a run-a-ball while Joe Root also brought up a double hundred of his own, to put England in a commanding position on day four of the Test match.

849 (for England vs West Indies, 1930)

During the year 1930, England posted the highest Test team total at the time against West Indies at the Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, on the back of a triple hundred from Andy Sandham. He got able support from the centurion Les Ames, but still the England cricket team were unable to defeat West Indies, who managed to hold on to a draw with a spirited performance in their second innings.

903/7d (for England vs Australia, 1938)

Just before World War II, the England cricket team improved on the highest Test team total at the time, going past 900 runs for the first-time in the history of the longest format of the game. Leonard Hutton scored 364, Maurice Leyland and Joe Hardstaff also contributed with substantial hundreds, to propel English innings to historical proportions before they defeated Australia by an innings and 579 runs at The Oval in London.

952/6d (for Sri Lanka vs India, 1997)

The highest Test team belongs to Sri Lanka, who posted a whopping 952/6 total on the board before declaring their innings against India at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo in 1997 with Sanath Jayasuriya’s triple hundred, Roshan Mahanama’s double hundred, and a hundred from Aravinda de Silva . Although Sri Lanka reached the highest Test team total in history, they were responding to a formidable first innings score of 537/8 declared from India, and there were only two completed innings in this Test match after five days of action.
