Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal suffers ACL injury; set to miss months of action

During a 2-0 win for Real Madrid over Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu in the La Liga clash, captain Dani Carvajal suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in the second half added time. Following the conclusion of the match, the 32-year-old took to his official Instagram account to confirm the extent of his injury before remarking that he will be missing several months of action after going through a surgery, while thanking everyone for their messages.

It was quite a cagey affair at the Santiago Bernabeu with only three shots on target from both the teams combined, but Real Madrid converted both their chances into goal, to secure a vital win over Villareal. Federico Valverde opened the scoring for Real Madrid in the 14th minute before Vinicius Junior made it 2-0 in the 73rd minute prior to the unfortunate ACL injury to their captain Dani Carvajal, who seemingly over-extending his knee in a collision with Yeremy Pino.

When Dani Carvajal was in agony on the pitch with his teammates surrounding him, the Real Madrid medical personnel arrived at the scene before carrying him off as he was in tears. In his post on the official Instagram account, Dani Carvajal wrote, “Serious cruciate ligament injury confirmed, I’m going to have to go through surgery and be off the field for a few months. Already looking forward to starting recovery and coming back like a beast. Thank you all so much for your messages, I feel very loved.”

Carlo Ancelotti, the Real Madrid manager, remarked in the post-match interview that his players were feeling very sad and worried for their captain Dani Carvajal. He was quoted as saying, “Something happened that happens a lot, because of the calendar, and it happened to a very, very important player for us.”

The statement from Real Madrid on Dani Carvajal’s injury read, “Following tests carried out on Dani Carvajal by the Real Madrid Medical Services, the player has been diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, a ruptured external collateral ligament and a ruptured popliteus tendon in his right leg. He will undergo surgery in the coming days.”
