On Tuesday, October 1, the Indian cricket team registered a comprehensive seven-wicket win in the second Test over Bangladesh at the Green Park in Kanpur, to clinch the two-match series 2-0. The day five of the Test match saw India chase down the 95-run target in a relatively comfortable manner with a fifty from Yashasvi Jaiswal after bundling out Bangladesh in their second innings for 146 runs.
Notably, at the start of day five, Bangladesh were 26/2, behind by 26 runs, and they lost the key wicket of Mominul Haque, the centurion of the first innings quite cheaply. Following that, Shadman Islam (50 off 101) and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (19 off 37) had a partnership of 55 runs for the fourth wicket, to keep Bangladesh in the Test match at the Green Park in Kanpur.
Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets each
After they lost their wickets in quick succession, only Mushfiqur Rahim could get a score of substance for Bangladesh, getting up to 37 runs off 63 balls, but without any support from the batters at the other end. It led to Bangladesh getting bundled out in just 47 overs in their second innings after three of their experienced bowlers in Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets each.
In pursuit of the 95-run target, India lost wickets of their captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill early to Mehidy Hasan Miraz, but then a controlled partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal and unbeaten Virat Kohli led to them going past the finishing line. Earlier in the Test match, after rain and wet outfield had played spoilsport for the majority of the first three days, Bangladesh had scored 233 runs in their first innings, and in response, India had declared their first innings on 285/9 within 35 overs.
Moreover, this was the 180th Test match win for India in international cricket, with 178 losses, and 222 draws to their name in the longest format of the game. In the post-match chat, Jasprit Bumrah was quoted as saying, as per ESPNcricinfo, “It’s just good to get the win after we lost two days. Really special win today. So, in this you use your experience. Yes, it’s easier said and done. This was different to what it was in Chennai.”
