On Sunday, September 22, India registered a comprehensive 280-run win over Bangladesh in the first Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. In pursuit of a mammoth 515-run target, the Bangladesh cricket team showed some early resistance, but when the Indian bowlers broke the opening stand, they went on to consistently take wickets and bundle out the opposition for just 234 runs.
In this article, SportsTiger gives ratings to Indian players for their contributions in the win against Bangladesh in the first Test.
Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul – 5
Captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul weren’t able to make much of an impact with the bat in both innings for India in the first Test match against Bangladesh. Some of the dismissals from these three experienced batters left a lot to be desired in terms of their shot selection, which they will be needing to improve on, in the second Test match next week.
Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep – 6
With the pitch providing a bit of assistance with the new ball in the first couple of days, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep picked up a couple of key wickets in the first innings of Bangladesh. While Siraj was quite good in bowling in the corridor of uncertainty outside the off stump of the batter, Deep was attacking the stumps on a regular basis, successfully cleaning up the likes of Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque on back-to-back deliveries.
Yashasvi Jaiswal – 7
When India lost the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli cheaply in the first innings on the first morning, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was batting on the other end, dug down deep, to score a valuable fifty, and brought the team out of trouble. Although, in the second innings, the left-handed batter was trying to be a bit too aggressive against the new ball bowlers from Bangladesh, which led to his early downfall.
Shubman Gill – 7.5
In the first innings, Shubman Gill was dismissed without troubling the scorers, getting caught down the leg side after failing to put away a half volley to the boundary. The second innings saw the right-handed batter make up for his early dismissal, scoring his fifth Test hundred, staying unbeaten till the end to help India declare, setting up a mammoth target of 515 runs for Bangladesh.
Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah – 8.5
Rishabh Pant made his return to Test cricket in style after an 18-month absence, playing a key role in resurrecting the first innings of India before smashing a quick-fire century in the second innings, to set up the win for the team against Bangladesh. Jasprit Bumrah picked up four wickets in the first innings before one more in the second innings versus the Bangla Tigers, which included names like Shadman Islam, Zakir Hasan, and Mushfiqur Rahim.
Ravindra Jadeja – 9
When India found themselves in trouble at 144/6 in the first innings, Ravindra Jadeja played a match-defining innings of 86 runs in 124 balls, ensuring that the team set up a formidable score of 376 runs on the board. With the ball in hand, the left-arm spinner took key wickets of Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das in the first innings before adding a further three wickets to his name in the second innings, including Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who had scored a fifty before his dismissal.
Ravichandran Ashwin – 9.5
Ravichandran Ashwin scored his second Test hundred at this home ground in Chepauk, Chennai, playing a major role in making sure that India got over 350 runs in the first innings after finding themselves in strife multiple times. Although he wasn’t able to take a Bangladesh wicket in the first innings, he made up for it with his 37th five-wicket haul, registering figures of 6/88 before getting adjudicated as the player of the match.
