Neeraj Chopra, regarded as one of the most successful Indian track and field athletes, has amassed a huge fan following in the last few years. The two-time Olympic medallist now not only enjoys a loyal following in India but also abroad. Recently, a video has surfaced on social media, where the athlete was asked for his phone number by a female fan. Notably, Neeraj recently concluded his 2024 season with a second-spot finish in the Diamond League Final in Brussels.
In an undated video doing rounds on social media, the Tokyo 2020 champion was signing autographs for his fans when two young women approached him. Neeraj happily agreed for pictures and posed for the fans. However, just when the athlete was about to walk away, one of the fans asked him for his phone number. In the video, the fan could be heard saying, “Can I have your number?” Neeraj graciously turned down her request and denied the fan.
Ever since Neeraj won gold, parents want me to teach their kids javelin: Razia Sheikh
Former India javelin thrower, Razia Sheikh, who was the first Indian woman to cross the 50-m mark opened up on how Neeraj Chopra’s back-to-back Olympic medals increased the game’s popularity. Sheikh said, “Ever since Neeraj won back-to-back Olympic medals, several parents have been calling me up to teach their kids javelin. It includes parents who are from financially modest backgrounds. I am willing to teach them for free, but I need more support from the authorities. For instance, it would be great if we get permission to practise at big grounds.”
She added, “Since 2022, I have taught about 25 kids. While they do well at local tournaments and at the state level, they need more support to shine at the bigger events. It is a tough sport and an athlete’s diet and fitness regimen are equally important.”
