The Paris Paralympics 2024 have been a landmark event for India, with the country achieving its best-ever performance. India won a total of 29 medals, including seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze. This surpasses their previous record of 19 medals set at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Avani Lekhara, Harvinder Singh, Sumit Antil, and Preethi Pal were some of the athletes, who made history for India at the Paris Paralympic Games.
India’s success in Paris has been historic for several reasons. The country sent its largest-ever delegation to the Paralympics, with 84 athletes competing in 12 sports. This is an increase from the nine sports at Tokyo 2020. India also competed in new sports like para-cycling, para-rowing, and para-judo.
Best-ever performance since India’s debut at the games: PM Modi on Paris Paralympics 2024 campaign
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised this historic achievement of the nation’s para-athletes on social media platform X, and wrote, “Paralympics 2024 have been special and historical. India is overjoyed that our incredible para-athletes have brought home 29 medals, which is the best-ever performance since India’s debut at the Games. This achievement is due to the unwavering dedication and indomitable spirit of our athletes. Their sporting performances have given us many moments to remember and inspired several upcoming athletes.”
Some highlights include Avani Lekhara winning two gold medals in shooting and setting a new world record. Navdeep Singh won gold in javelin throw, and Harvinder Singh won gold in archery, becoming India’s first Paralympic archery champion.
India did really well in athletics, winning 17 medals. Preethi Pal won bronze in the 100m race, and Simran won bronze in the 200m race.
This great performance places India among the top 20 countries in the Paralympics. PM Modi’s praise reflects the nation’s pride in these achievements and the hard work of the athletes.
