The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Tuesday, August 27 named 15-member squad for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to be held in the UAE in October. Notably, the side will be led by Heather Knight for the fourth time in the T20 World Cup tournament.
Moreover, wicketkeeper-batter, Bess Heath and all-rounders Freya Kemp and Danielle Gibson have earned their maiden call for the marquee tournament. The squad is more or less the same as the 2023 T20 World Cup, including 12 similar faces. One of the notable absentees from the side is Lauren Filer, who featured in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand in July.
However, she hasn’t been named in the 15-member squad, but will continue to be a part of the preparation camp in Abu Dhabi from September 13 to 24. Speaking after the squad announcement, England captain Heather Knight said, “World Cups are always special events to be involved in as a player and I’m really excited by the squad we have selected to take over to the UAE. It’s an honour to lead the team into another World Cup.”
The England Women head coach, Jon Lewis added, “Selecting teams and squads with this group of players has become incredibly tricky and tough. There are players who have been really unfortunate to miss out and they’ll be a big part of what we do with England Cricket in the future.”
“I feel the 15 players selected give us a really well balanced squad in terms of experience, youth and most importantly the skills to cope and excel in the conditions we feel we will be faced with in the UAE,” Lewis further spoke. It is to be noted that England has been placed in Group B, alongside South Africa, 2016 champions West Indies, Bangladesh and Scotland. They will begin their campaign against Bangladesh on October 5, followed by matches against South Africa (October 7), Scotland (October 13) and West Indies (October 15).
