On Monday, August 26, Barcelona loaned out defender Clement Lenglet to Atletico Madrid for the remainder of the 2024-25 season without an option of a permanent transfer. The French international became surplus to the requirements of Barcelona due to his wages, making it literally impossible for the Catalan giants to keep a hold of him.
Notably, after spending the last two seasons on loan at Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in the Premier League, Clement Lenglet returned to Barcelona, making a few appearances during the pre-season. But, since his wages were €16 million per year, Barcelona found it difficult to have him playing for them this season due to their current financial situation.
In a statement on their official website, Barcelona confirmed the loan move away to Atletico Madrid for Clement Lenglet. They wrote, “Barcelona and Atlético Madrid have reached an agreement for the loan of the French defender Clément Lenglet until 30 June 2025. There is no option of a permanent transfer.”
According to the report from Barca Universal, Atletico Madrid are expected to cover around €4 million of Clement Lenglet’s €16 million wages, while the rest of it will be borne by Barcelona. Moreover, the Catalan giants have already extended the contract of their defender till 2027.
Moreover, since 2018, Clement Lenglet has made 160 appearances for Barcelona, winning La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup once each.
