Paris Olympics 2024 Shooting: Ramita Jindal finishes seventh in women’s 10m air rifle; bows out of medal race

On Monday, July 29, India’s Ramita Jindal finished at seventh place in women’s 10m air rifle event at the Paris Olympics 2024. The 20-year-old Indian, who became only the second Indian after Manu Bhaker to qualify for the final in shooting, entered the final with a score of 631.5 in the qualification round

The 20-year-old, who had a hard luck in the mixed team, trailed against some of the top ranked athletes and was eventually eliminated. She started settling at fourth place at the end of Series 1. However, some disappointing shots in Series 2, which earned her only 9.7 left her trailing in the leaderboard. While she escaped the first round elimination by mere margin, she had to walk out, finishing in seventh place in the event on Sunday with a score of 145.3.

What are the rules in women’s 10m air rifle final at the Paris Olympics?

The competition format is divided into two parts at the Olympic Games. Firstly, the athletes fire two series of five shots each, with a time limit of 250 seconds per series. Following this, they proceed to the second part, which consists of 14 single shots. Each of these shots is fired on command, and the athletes have 50 seconds to complete each one.

After the tenth shot, which includes the two series and the first two single shots, the lowest scoring finalists start getting eliminated. The eliminations continue after every two shots until only the gold and silver medalists remain. In total, the finalists fire 24 shots, making the highest possible score for the 24 finals shots to be 261.6 points.

In the event of a tie for the lowest ranking athlete to be eliminated, the tied athletes will continue to fire additional single shots until the tie is broken, ensuring a clear ranking for all finalists.
