Paris Olympics 2024 Badminton: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty’s men’s doubles match called off; here’s why

After a big day at the Paris Olympics 2024 for India on Sunday, the Day 3 of the Summer Games was scheduled to start with the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty taking the court at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena in Paris.

But just moments ahead of the match, the Indian duo received an unexpected news as the match was ultimately called off. The German adversaries were forced to withdraw from the competition as a result of an unfortunate injury to one of their players. In what was a must-win game for the Indian duo, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced that the German player, Mark Lamsfuss withdrew due to a knee injury, leading to its cancellation.

Furthermore, the BWF’s statement also added that the consequent Group C matches against the Indian duo and France’s Lucas Corvee-Ronan Labar are cancelled and all group results involving the German pair are nullified. “As per BWF General Competition Regulations for group stage play, the results of all matches played, or yet to be played, involving in Group C are now considered deleted,” the BWF statement read.

The Indian duo will next take on Indonesian pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto on Tuesday, July 30 at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena in Paris.
