Paris Olympics 2024 Hockey: India secure thrilling 3-2 win over New Zealand in Pool B

On Saturday, July 27, India secured a thrilling 3-2 win over New Zealand in their opening Pool B match in men’s hockey at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir at Paris Olympics 2024. In the final quarter, when the scoreline read 2-2, the Indian men’s hockey team dug deep to find a winner in the 59th minute via a penalty stroke conversion from the captain H armanpreet Singh.

In the first quarter of their Paris 2024 opener in men’s hockey, India got off to a very good start, building a couple of attacks in the opposition semicircle. But against the run of play, New Zealand earned a penalty corner, which was converted by Sam Lane in the 8th minute to give them a 1-0 lead.

The second quarter saw India put the pressure on New Zealand in the final third before earning a penalty corner. At the third time of asking, Mandeep Singh poached a goal in front of the New Zealand goalkeeper off the rebound following a powerful strike from the captain Harmanpreet Singh, to put India on level terms at 1-1 in the 24th minute.

After a pulsating end to the second quarter, the Indian men’s hockey team started the fourth quarter in style with a field goal in the 34th minute. Vivek Sagar Prasad put the ball past the New Zealand goalkeeper after a plethora of shots at goal from his teammates, to give India a 2-1 lead in the Paris 2024 men’s hockey opener.

In the fourth quarter, New Zealand found a way to level the scoreline 2-2 after Simon Child got the goal in the 52nd minute off the penalty corner. But, in the 59th minute, the captain Harmanpreet Singh was a saving grace for India with his penalty stroke conversion, to give India the all-important 3-2 lead, which they kept at the end of the match.
