The biggest sporting spectacle of the world, the Olympic Games were officially declared open on Friday night, July 26 in the French capital city of Paris. While the opening ceremony was first of a kind in several different ways, it was also marred by a massive blunder as it was near its end.
On Friday, July 26, during the final moments of the opening ceremony, the Olympic flag was raised upside down, bringing an embarrassing moment not only for the officials but even for the general masses and the athletes. With the three-and-a-half-hour-long ceremony coming to its end, a masked man carried the flag to the Place du Trocadero. As it was handed to the officials there, they slowly began raising it, but did not realise that the iconic five-coloured rings were in wrong position.
Moreover, the opening ceremony, which was marred by rain, saw some 30,000 people line up on the banks of river Seine to cheer for the athletes who are set to participate at the quadrennial Summer Games. The lightening opening ceremony also saw some brilliant performances from stars, including Lade Gaga, Celine Dion, among others.
