During the European Athletics U18 Championships 2024 in Slovakia, an incident took the internet by storm, shocking the world and recalling fans and enthusiast of the saying “never celebrate too early”. A British teen, who took a considerable lead in the 200m race at the European Athletics U18 Championships 2024, took a foot off the pedal way too early.
All was well until he slowed down while nearing the finish line and was later left stunned as he finished amongst the lasts. Jake Odey-Jordon of Great Britain dominated the track in heat four, but was well out of front with just 50m to go, leading to his fellow runners taking the top spot.
However, moments from the race went viral, Odey-Jordan eventually finished fifth with a timing of 22.12 and was knocked out of the competition. The commentator was even left stunned and was heard saying, “That was an absolute disaster. He has eased up far, far, far too early as half the field swept past him.” “This is going to be a lesson learned the very hard way after what was for 150m a masterful display of sprinting,” he further exclaimed.

The 16-year-old athlete however accepted his fault and agreed that he shouldn’t be sad on it. “It is all right. I mean, it is my fault, so I cannot be sad about anything but myself. It is what it is. It felt good. It was not the fastest run, but it felt good. For sure, it could have been sub 21. But it is all good though. I am just out here, it is my first race on this meet. I just tried to get on my legs, nothing hurts me or nothing like that.”
