MS Dhoni, regarded as one of the best names and the most successful Indian skipper, has left an unparallel mark with his leadership, wicketkeeping and finishing skills. The 2011 ODI World Cup winner has already called time on his international career and is approaching the end of his IPL career as well. The former leader of Chennai Super Kings, fans’ beloved ‘Thala’, is in the last leg of his career, and might soon bring down curtains on his glorious trophy-filled IPL career.
Three reasons why MS Dhoni won’t play in IPL 2025
Since players like him come once in a lifetime, and fans still want to see the Indian stalwart lead the Yellow Army, here are three reasons, IPL 2024 was his last season, and he won’t play in 2025.
Getting by the years
MS Dhoni turned 42 this year, and being one of the oldest players to continue playing in the IPL, Dhoni may consider stepping down. The Ranchi boy may leave the franchise to make room for younger and fresh talents who could lead the side to new glories. MS Dhoni’s retirement could also signal a strategic move for the franchise to invest in new names, for the team’s sustainability in the future.
Physical toll and constant struggles
With growing age, MS Dhoni has been seen battling through physical toll and injuries during the recent seasons of the tournament. Dhoni played a significant part of the 2023 season with an injured knee and immediately underwent surgery post CSK’s fifth IPL victory. In 2024 as well, Captain Cool couldn’t make a solid comeback and his struggle was very much evident. Such regular physical concerns could compel Dhoni to consider his playing career in the T20 league.
Personal priorities
MS Dhoni, former captain of CSK and the Indian cricket team, has been on national duty since 2004. In his nearly two-decade-long career, Dhoni brought several accolades to the nation as well as his IPL franchise. While he has started to enjoy time with family and invest his time in other ventures ever since his international retirement in 2000, retiring from IPL would allow him to fully dedicate his time to family, Indian Army, numerous business ventures, vintage cars, and his first love, bikes.
