Red Bull driver Sergio Perez suffered a dramatic high-speed crash in the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday, July 20. The Mexican driver lost control in turn 8 and ended up hitting the wall. This crash further blew his hopes of avoiding the Red Bull axe. With the summer break fast approaching, rumours have been going around that the team owners could make a change, casting doubt on his tenure with the team.
The incident occurred during the Q1 session, after him having started the session strongly and set a time of 1:17.886 on the timesheet. However, the 34-year-old lost control on the entry into the eighth turn and had the rear of the car swinging around. The driver reported that he was unharmed after the left side of his car went on to slam into a barrier. However, following the crash, his future with the team lies in danger.
Makes me more determined to get back to my form, to get back with this team : Sergio Perez after his crash in Budapest
Following the crash in Budapest, Perez admitted that he needs to end his streak of poor performances. Sergio, who was fourth-quickest in last practice, said, “I’m obviously very disappointed because the whole weekend has been really strong up to now. It hurts to let your whole team down, but at the end of the day I’m determined even more than ever to get back up to where we belong as a team.”
He added, “It makes me more determined to get back to my form, to get back with this team and basically head down and obviously learn from these mistakes that have happened one after the other and take the positives. Yesterday I think we were the fastest car in the long runs, so hopefully we are able to see that in tomorrow’s race and make progress, minimise the damage and hopefully score some good points.”
