A new indoor cricket s tadium is in the works in Australia with ambitions of hosting Test cricket. This new stadium is set to be built in the city of Hobart which will be getting a team called the Tasmania Devils in the Australian Football League in 2028. The Devils will be the 19th team in the AFL and as part of their deal, a new stadium for the team is set to be constructed.
This new stadium will be a multi-purpose venue at Macquarie Point and have a transparent roof to facilitate day and night cricket. The stadium is set to have a capacity of 23,000 and hopes to host Test cricket, according to Macquarie Point Development Corporation CEO Anne Beach.
We do want to get that red-ball sign-off and that’s critical: Anne Beach
Speaking to SEN Tassie, Beach said, “We want to get to red-ball [cricket], that’s our focus. The tricky thing is…we can’t be accredited until it’s built so what we need to do is keep working through the detail and design process with Cricket [Tasmania] and Cricket Australia and work with them to brief ICC to make sure they have all the information available.”
“We are workshopping with them through detailed design so we are making sure we are factoring in everything they need, [so] they have a clear understanding of how it’s coming together then hopefully that sign-off process is pretty smooth. But we do want to get that red-ball sign-off and that’s critical I think to enable that full content to be in the stadium,” Beach added.
