India’s top ranked singles player, Sumit Nagal on Monday, July 1 suffered first round defeat against his Serbian opponent Miomir Kecmanovic at the Wimbledon 2024. The former boys doubles champion lost to the Serbian, going down 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 in a battle which lasted for two hours 48 hours at the SW19.
It is to be noted that Nagal was playing his first main draw match at the Wimbledon Championships. Although, he showed flashes of brilliance during the almost three-hour match, but inconsistency led to his defeat. While he lost the opening set with 2-6 margin, he fought back to remain in the game, winning the second set 6-3. But what followed was his consecutive sets losses, eventually losing the first round match on Monday.
In a match which lasted for two hours and 48 minutes saw Nagal make 44 unforced errors. Despite them, he managed to hit 47 ticks, eventually accumulating 104 points compared to his Serbian opponent of 122 points. Nagal’s participation marked India’s first participation at a Wimbledon men’s singles main draw in five years. Prajnesh Gunneswaran last played for India in Men’s Singles in 2019, where he suffered a first round exit.
