On Friday, June 28, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray were placed in the Wimbledon 2024 draw despite getting operation on their respective injuries earlier this month. Although their participation in singles competition in Wimbledon isn’t confirmed yet, it is great news for the fans who have been looking forward to watching them play at SW19 in the next fortnight or so.
The SerbIan Novak Djokovic is slated to play against Vit Kopriva of Czechia in the round one of the Wimbledon men’s singles, while the British tennis star, Andy Murray, will also be taking on a Czechia player named Tomas Machac. The defending Wimbledon champion from Spain, Carlos Alcaraz, and the world number one from Italy, Jannik Sinner, are drawn in the same half, with a potential semifinal meeting on the horizon.
In the women’s singles, the defending Wimbledon champion Markteta Vondrousova of Czechia will be going up against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain in round one. The world number one, Iga Swiatek of Poland, will be taking on Sofia Kenin of the USA to kick-start her campaign at the SW19.
The route to the maiden Wimbledon trophy for Iga Swiatek is expected to be a tough one, filled with former Grand Slam champions including Angelique Kerber and Jelena Ostakpenko apart from the first round opponent. In the women’s singles quarterfinal stage, the reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova could be the opponent for Iga Swiatek.
Coco Gauff, the number two seed from the USA, could face up against Naomi Osaka and Victoria Azarenka, the former multi-time Grand Slam champions.
