The T20 World Cup 2024 is finally coming into shape with top eight teams fighting for a place in the final four. Although, the USA and Bangladesh are virtually out of the semifinals race, the remaining teams including South Africa, West Indies England, India, Australia and Afghanistan are all in.
The Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan on Sunday, June 23 registered a historic win over former champions Australia, denting the latter’s place in the semifinals. The Afghans defended the 149-run target, bundling out the Mitchell Marsh-led side at 127 with four balls to be spared.
How can Afghanistan qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals?
With Afghanistan’s win against Australia, the Group 1 standings are also wide open, like the Group 2, having a chance to secure the spot in the final four. To keep things simple, Afghanistan can qualify for semifinals if they beat Bangladesh in their next Super 8 match and India beat Australia on Monday, June 24.
Apart from this, if Afghanistan loses against Bangladesh, they would only progress if India beats Australia by a big margin. Furthermore, to keep their chances alive, they would want to finish with a better net run rate than Australia and Bangladesh. Also looking at the rain possibility with likely chances of match getting washed out, the Rashid Khan-led side will only qualify if India beat Australia.
